Pet Stain and Odour Treatment in Kitchener

The smell is not in the carpet. By the time a pet spot is a problem, the urine has gone through the fibre and the backing into the underpad, and often into the subfloor, and treating only the carpet is how people end up paying twice.

The carpet in a Kitchener family home with a dog or a cat has usually taken a hit or two the owners know about and several they do not. Urine is a particular problem because it does not stay where it lands: it soaks down through the carpet backing and spreads out in the underpad, where the area affected is often several times the size of the visible spot. As it dries the salts remain, and on every humid day they draw moisture and release odour again. That is why a spot that was cleaned and seemed fine in February smells in July.

Finding it

The treatment starts with an inspection using a UV light, which shows urine salts the eye cannot see, and a moisture meter to establish how far the contamination has spread and how deep. The owner is usually surprised. This step decides the whole approach, because a single fresh spot in the fibre and a year of a senior dog's accidents in the same corner are different jobs.

The three levels of treatment

  • Fibre only. Fresh or light contamination that has not reached the pad. An enzyme or oxidising treatment is applied, given dwell time, and extracted with the carpet clean. This is the best case and it is a complete fix.
  • Through to the pad. The treatment is flooded through the carpet into the pad in the affected area and extracted with a sub-surface tool that pulls from the pad rather than just the fibre. It works well on moderate contamination and is done from above without lifting the carpet.
  • Pad and subfloor. Heavy or repeated contamination. The carpet is lifted in that area, the pad section is cut out and replaced, the subfloor is cleaned and sealed, and the carpet is re-laid and cleaned. It is more work and it is the only honest fix at this level, because no product poured through a saturated pad removes what a saturated pad holds.

Stains versus odour

These are separate problems. Odour is the salts and bacteria; stains are the dye change in the fibre, which on a light builder carpet can be a yellow mark that an older urine deposit has effectively bleached in. Fresh stains usually come out. Old stains on nylon that have chemically altered the dye may lighten but not disappear, and you are told that at the inspection.

Vomit, feces and tracked-in mess

These sit higher in the fibre than urine and are more straightforward: pre-treatment for the protein or the dye, agitation, extraction. The exception is where the spot was scrubbed with a household product that has set it, which is the single most common thing that turns a removable stain into a permanent one. Blot, do not scrub, and do not use anything with bleach or an unknown ingredient before a professional has looked.

Frequently asked questions

Will the smell come back?

Not if the treatment reaches everywhere the urine did. The reason smells come back is a fibre-only treatment on contamination that reached the pad. The inspection determines the depth, and the level of treatment is matched to it rather than hoped for.

Can you just treat the one spot instead of the whole room?

Yes for the odour treatment itself, which is applied to the affected area. The surrounding carpet is usually cleaned at the same time so the treated area does not stand out as a clean patch on a soiled floor, but that is your call and it is quoted that way.

My cat sprays — is that different from a dog?

Cat urine is more concentrated and the odour is more persistent, and spraying is usually on vertical surfaces and the carpet edge along the wall, where it runs under the baseboard and into the tack strip. Treating the edge properly sometimes means pulling the carpet back from the wall in that spot.
